Wacom Cintiq 13 HD - is it worth buying?

Journal Entry: Sun Aug 24, 2014, 2:28 PM

I have used 3 Wacom tablets in my life. I was pleased with using my first ones, Volito and Intuos 3. Drivers of Intuos 4, my current tablet don't work properly on Windows 7. The sensitivity just doesn't work always good which makes me mad.

After experiencing this, I have decided to buy a new tablet. I have worked really hard on my commissions this year so I thought Wacom Cintiq 13 HD would be a perfect choice. It got really great reviews from users and so on but I'm not sure it will work good on Windows 7 or has it any big flaws or so on.

Have you worked with Wacom Cintiq 13 HD? Is it worth its price? Please share your opinions, new tablet will help me achieve better drawing skills!
---
TL;DR -> Is Wacom Cintiq 13 HD worth buying while having Windows 7 and 3 years old PC?

Good day. :) Very big thanks for the advice. Though it has now become apparent I won't have much success in doing digital arts. The need to study for years, and to spend hours on each art piece... that's too much. I simply wanted to create some "semi-photorealistic" pics of my gryphons, to capture the beauty of these awesome creatures and the world they live in. But I'm a writer, not an artist, and doing two large projects at the same time will lead to none of them being finished. Maybe I'll draw some crude lineart, but nothing more.

Just one more thing: do you draw art for other people, and if yes, what are the prices? My Gryphons strongly demand their own portraits. :) I don't have the money at the moment, but this may change soon.

XD

Good day, Izabela. I've found your gallery, and your art looks great. I'd like to draw several gryphon pictures myself, for I need some illustrations for my fantasy stories. Hovewer, I have little knowledge of digital drawing, and tutorials don't always help. That's why I'm asking you for advice. Just a few questions:

1. How much time (in hours) does it take to create a single drawing with detailed background? I have good learning skill, but no patience, and the need to spend months on a single art piece makes me sad. But perhaps I'm wrong?

2. How do you make these awesome color gradients (shadows on feathers, etc)? Do you paint the colors one by one like a painter does, or is there some special brush or technique involved? Sorry if the terminology I use here is unclear, I'm not familiar with English terms.

3. Should I use very large image sizes (4000x4000 or something like that) when drawing art in a program? Is there a need for it? If yes, what image size should I use?

4. Are there some good tutorials for drawing detailed pictures? The ones I've found are useless and lazily written.

Thanks in advance. Perhaps your advice will help me to ressurect this little project.

UPDATE: On the tutorials: I'd like to read a tutorial that explains the whole process of drawing an good art piece from start to finish. If you know where to find such tutorials, please tell me. The program I use is GIMP, but the tutorials for it are worthless. But the choice of program doesn't matter (I think. Perhaps not), I simply need to understand the process.

UPDATE 2: I've finally found a great tutorial, so skip the fourth question.

Hello there, I'm happy that you have found my page and like my pictures :)

Here are my answers:
1. It depends. When I have good references with good values (contrast) it goes very quickly. There is a problem when the values are poor and I need to redo it by myself. I can draw an detailed picture from 8 hours to even 60 hours. Everything depends on the reference matter. I'm learning to be quicker and force myself to work very fast. It hurts my eyes, my hands and so on but I think I can manage to achieve it ^^

2. Well, it's all colour and value knowledge. You need to read about them in various tutorials from tumblr, deviantart, search on cg forums to get the proper knowledge. I was learning for years, and I still don't know everything. I'm still improving and observing the nature, photos and other's work to be better. I use brushes by Jonas de Ro, Sandara and also round brushes (soft and hard) from photoshop. I reccomend you to read about the brushes and their presets on DA, there are many good tutorials here ^^

I recommend you to copy photos and draw from life. Do not use colour picker or trace. Learn how to observe and match colours you see, not you think you see.

3. I do big images. Like, 3000x4000 pix and 300 dpi is my typical standard. My files are often like 500 mb-1000 mb big. Working on this size is the best, you need to know how good your computer is to manage to work on images like that. 2 gb of ram and i5 pentium is quite OK for images like that.

4. I recommend you not only read the tutorials, but also watching videos and reading books. I own these books:
"Color and light: a guide for the realist painter" by James Gurney
"An Atlas of Animal Anatomy for Artists (Dover Anatomy for Artists)"
Varius books by Andrew Loomis (for face anatomy)
Books by Jose Paramón - about drawing and human anatomy.

I often visit anatomy4sculptors page.

I hope I helped you in some way!
